Registering your car in NSW

Registering a car - Filling out registration form

Vehicle registrations are handled by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA). When your vehicle registration is due for renewal, the RTA will send you a renewal notice about six weeks before the expiry date. You must renew the registration regardless of whether you receive this renewal notice or not. If you don’t receive a renewal notice, contact the RTA before the registration expiry date.

Most vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles and light trailers, can be registered online. With NRMA Insurance, the process is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Get a CTP Greenslip

A CTP Greenslip is Third Party Insurance that covers personal injury you cause to others. It must be taken out when you register your vehicle in NSW. You are covered if you have an accident and someone in your car, or in other vehicles, or a pedestrian, is seriously injured.

CTP Greenslip policy

You can apply and pay for your NRMA CTP Greenslip using our secure online payment system or you can get a quote.

We also offer Electronic Greenslips where an electronic record of your Greenslip information and payment details will be sent to the RTA. This means you may not need to visit an NRMA Insurance or RTA office to pay your registration.

2. If your car is over five years old, you need a Safety Inspection Report or ‘pink slip’

Simply take your vehicle to an e-Safety station to get your pink slip. Once your vehicle has been inspected, the inspection station will send your pink slip to the RTA electronically.

Find your nearest e-Safety Station at the RTA website.

If your car is under five years old you don’t need a Pink slip.

3. Renew your registration online with the RTA

Once you have your CTP Greenslip and pink slip (if required), you can renew your registration online at the RTA website.

Just bought your car?

If there are registration plates on the vehicle, you must be given a Safety Inspection Report or ‘pink slip’ that’s not more than 42 days old. If the vehicle has been registered within the last month, you don’t need a pink slip. Note you must transfer the registration into your name within 14 days.

If the vehicle is not registered, you need to take it to an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS) for an identification check. Ring the RTA on 13 22 13 for your nearest AUVIS.
